Dinner: Monday, January 7, 2019

Much to my surprise, the wife took a shot at making take out Chinese food for dinner tonight. Well, I said much to my surprise, but I’m not really surprised. She’s worked hard to expand her fantastic cooking chops into unfamiliar terrain, including not only Chinese but Thai and Mexican as well. But I digress. The wife’s offering tonight was Orange Chicken with steamed rice. It wasn’t perfect, but it was really good for a first attempt. The best part was the crispiness of the fried coating. It stood up nicely to the orange sauce and remained crispy. The sauce itself was good, but a bit on the tart side when compared to our usual take out haunts. I also thought the meal overall could have used a little more seasoning. If I did numeric scores, I’d give the wife a seven out of ten for her first foray into orange chicken. Looking forward for to her second attempt.

Lunch: Thursday, January 3, 2019

So, it is not unusual for my lovely wife to pack up leftovers, for my lunch at work, from dinner the night before, and when it is her potato and chicken yellow curry with jasmine rice, I don’t complain at all, as it is one of my favorite things to eat. Yes, it does start with a prepared yellow curry sauce, my current favorite, Mae Ploy Thai Yellow Curry Sauce, but she then spices it up with either Thai chili peppers, habaneros or one of the other varieties that we have begun growing at the house. I highly recommend this one if you don’t have time to make your own yellow curry sauce from scratch. It is also vegetarian before you add whatever ingredients you want, it is useful for vegetarian curries, which the wife often makes me when I am dieting. Either way the flavor is excellent and I look forward to this meal very much, for lunch or dinner. Even my youngest child loves this one.

Wednesday Dinner: June 27, 2018

Again, been on a hiatus from the diet for a bit, and thus been having more variety for dinner than usual. The wife surprised me tonight with her chicken and potato yellow curry with Jasmine rice for dinner. She knows it’s one of my favorites. I love the spice and the creamy texture that the coconut cream brings to it.

She also made up a cake for dessert as well. Not exactly sure what the name is, but it had pineapple, orange and whipped cream involved. Really enjoyed it. The wife does a great job, especially when she’s on summer vacation. Lol.

Review: La Playa Mexican Restaurant & Cantina

To my knowledge, there are at three restaurants that are actually labeled as “La Playa” in the Corpus Christi area, and at least one other that basically has the same menu.  Ironically, one of the locations that is actually labeled as a La Playa has a very different menu from the other two, well relatively speaking for Tex-Mex food that is.  It wouldn’t be truthful to pretend that I don’t already have some very set opinions about all these locations having eaten at them all repeatedly over the last several years for a variety of reasons.  By and large, my opinion is generally favorable overall, but that is the past.  This is focused on my visit recently to the location on South Padre Island Drive near Weber Road. A lot of buzz was circulating around this place out on Padre Island, almost universally positive, but I hadn’t had a chance to get there and try it out for myself, but I was certainly very curious.  I love local, non-chain places, at least I love to try them out.  History has dictated that despite the local designation some of them turn out to be major disappointments (I’m looking at you Bellino’s Italian Restaurant).  Even so, during the vacation out at Mustang Island, I had a chance to make lunch at Dragonfly and jumped at the chance.  I was accompanied by my baby girl and three other adults, and we arrived right as they opened for lunch at 11:30 a.m.  (more…)
