Review: The Angry Marlin Restaurant and Coolwater Bar

In recent years there has been an upswing in what I would describe as casual upscale dining on North Padre Island just across the JFK from Flour Bluff and the greater Corpus Christi metropolitan area.  Popular eateries like Dragonfly and Black Sheep Bistro have joined in with long time favorites like Island Italian to create a food scene that’s as varied and vibrant as any in the area.  They each tend to offer something a little more than just your standard dining experience, be it an outdoor area, distinct dining environment, culinary distinctiveness or infused liquors and unique beverages, each is little different and worthwhile to visit.  The Angry Marlin is a welcome addition to the Island dining scene and describes itself as:

“The Island’s newest restaurant experience, where fresh and local ingredients are always a must. Explore the ever evolving menu of seafood and Santa Fe flavors of chile, corn, and beans with a fusion of French and Italian cuisine.”

Review: Wendy’s Store #2869 (Drive Through)

Wendy’s and I have had an on again off again relationship for years based on the tendency of the local franchise locations to be very hit or miss when it comes to quality, service and cleanliness of their restaurants.  I’ve had some of the best fast food at some Wendy’s locations, and then I’ve had some of the absolute worst, in terms of service and quality.  At one point I didn’t go for years after getting the worst chicken sandwich I’ve ever been served at a Wendy’s location (not this one, I got that at Wendy’s Store #3248, 45012 Ayers).  It so happens though that the good has generally brought me back because when Wendy’s is good, it’s usually very good and there is a location that isn’t far from the house which comes in handy when I just want to drive through and grab something to take back to the house as was the case on this occasion.

Nolan’s Original Poorboys is an interesting situation.  The Nolan’s Restaurant on Weber Road and hasn’t been open in years and years was one of my grandfather’s favorite restaurants and I had many a meal there growing up, and fell in love with their signature poorboy in the process.  After years of not having any locations close by, this smaller, less full service restaurant more casual dining venue opened nearby, bring back many of the classic flavors from my childhood, including the aforementioned poorboy.  Needless to say a very exciting prospect for me.  On this occasion though, I didn’t actually feel like getting out and going inside for a sit down meal, although I have in the past.  On this occasion I decided to call in a to go order and use their pickup drive through window.  (more…)

Review: Mamma Maria’s Grill

I love Italian food, it’s easily one of my favorite cuisines.  Sadly, especially here in Corpus, actually finding Italian food worth eating, especially at the prices that are charged, is a somewhat difficult task.  The bulk of the offerings are chain places, like Olive Garden, that serve up mediocrity with a premium price and subpar service, or local places that are either bad, expensive, or provide an uneven experience based upon whomever may actually be working in the kitchen that night.  Because of these issues, I’m always happy to see a new Italian eatery open up locally, especially when it isn’t a chain and when it has a menu that is largely something other than pizza.  Not that there’s any thing wrong with pizza. Mamma Maria’s Grill caught my attention one afternoon as I was passing by, mainly because it is the newest restaurant to open in a location that has been a few others, including a CiCi’s Pizza.  When I saw it was Italian and Greek, I made plans to go.  (more…)
