I’ve always had a kind of love-hate relationship with bottled water, especially the higher price varieties. It’s not that I consider them bad products in and of themselves, but I know too much to be comfortable with the way they are labeled and marketed. For instance, the one bottled in my home town, Everest. Yes, it brings to mind the name sake mountain and so forth, but it is bottled from the municipal water supply of my hometown, Corpus Christi, Texas, a couple of hours north of Mexico and not a mountain in sight. Not to mention the water out of that municipal system is nothing special.
So having said that, I don’t know how much truth goes on label-wise, or if any of the long winded story about how it created is actually true, I do like the Glaceau Smartwater product put forth by the Cocoa Cola Company. I like the mouth feel and taste of the water over most other water products I’ve tried, although I do think it is wildly overpriced. I consider it one of my top three bottled waters and thus recommend it if you can get past the price.
The new Taco Bell Fiery Doritos Locos taco has been on my radar for a little while recently after I saw one of the commercials for it, and while my overall opinion of the first two tacos in the series is hit or miss (thought the original unimpressive and overly salty, even by Taco Bell standards, but enjoyed the second, ranch style one) I always keep an open mind when it comes to something that sounds good and is potentially at least a little spicy. Besides, Taco Bell is admittedly one of my favorite fast food places and I always look forward to trying their new specialty items. Now that full disclosure is completed…

Wendy’s and I have had an on again off again relationship for years based on the tendency of the local franchise locations to be very hit or miss when it comes to quality, service and cleanliness of their restaurants. I’ve had some of the best fast food at some Wendy’s locations, and then I’ve had some of the absolute worst, in terms of service and quality. At one point I didn’t go for years after getting the worst chicken sandwich I’ve ever been served at a Wendy’s location (not this one, I got that at Wendy’s Store #3248, 45012 Ayers). It so happens though that the good has generally brought me back because when Wendy’s is good, it’s usually very good and there is a location that isn’t far from the house which comes in handy when I just want to drive through and grab something to take back to the house as was the case on this occasion.

Domino’s Pizza is my family’s current favorite for delivery pizza and has been for about six months or so now, beating out the previous favorite, Papa John’s Pizza. It’s been my general experience that most fast food style delivery pizza is pretty much all created equal, and one being preferred over another has more to do with coupons and small variations in flavor than anything really different. The other difference being the service that individual locations provide. In the past I have stopped ordering entire brands of pizza after receiving abysmal service from the location that was servicing the area in which I resided (I’m looking at you Papa John’s Pizza Store #2249 in Flour Bluff). The ongoing upgrade and some new products introduced by Domino’s recently have pulled things in Domino’s favor, at least as far as trying things out. Read the rest of this page »
4201 South Padre Island Drive
Corpus Christi, TX 78411
Hours: Mon – Sun, 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
To my knowledge, there are at three restaurants that are actually labeled as “La Playa” in the Corpus Christi area, and at least one other that basically has the same menu. Ironically, one of the locations that is actually labeled as a La Playa has a very different menu from the other two, well relatively speaking for Tex-Mex food that is. It wouldn’t be truthful to pretend that I don’t already have some very set opinions about all these locations having eaten at them all repeatedly over the last several years for a variety of reasons. By and large, my opinion is generally favorable overall, but that is the past. This is focused on my visit recently to the location on South Padre Island Drive near Weber Road. Nolan’s Original Poorboys (Takeout)
2330 Airline Road
Hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday,
11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday-Saturday
Nolan’s Original Poorboys is an interesting situation. The Nolan’s Restaurant on Weber Road and hasn’t been open in years and years was one of my grandfather’s favorite restaurants and I had many a meal there growing up, and fell in love with their signature poorboy in the process. After years of not having any locations close by, this smaller, less full service restaurant more casual dining venue opened nearby, bring back many of the classic flavors from my childhood, including the aforementioned poorboy. Needless to say a very exciting prospect for me. On this occasion though, I didn’t actually feel like getting out and going inside for a sit down meal, although I have in the past. On this occasion I decided to call in a to go order and use their pickup drive through window. Read the rest of this page »

Catfish Charlie’s has been a popular local eating spot for thirty years, although historically not one of my personal favorites. It is heavy on, yep, you guessed it, fried catfish, along with other fried seafood, mainly shrimp, plus a little southern homestyle like chicken fried steak and some Louisiana style dishes like red beans and rice with ham. It’s always been the focus on seafood that has kept it from being a personal favorite in the past. I am not a big seafood fan, largely because of how badly it’s usually handled in restaurants (I’m looking at you Red Lobster). Ironically, Catfish Charlie’s has become one of my little girl’s favorite places. She loves the catfish and fried shrimp. Go figure. Anyway, it was her wishes that found her and I at Catfish Charlie’s in that kind of quiet period that is too late for lunch and too early for dinner, accompanied by my parents, whom she had talked into going with a cute little song about her love for the place. 118 Beach Street
Port Aransas, Texas
Hours: Sun – Thurs 7:30 am – 9:00 pm
Fri & Sat 7:30 am – 10:00 pm
Sometimes it’s nice to get out to the beach in the summer, especially given my close proximity to it anyway, and a trip to Port Aransas is usually a good time, even if it was just to get my baby girl’s picture taken with a monkey in from of a souvenir shop. Anyway, the point of all of this is that I found myself in Port Aransas, a couple of hours after lunch time, hungry and with a hungry little girl and a couple of other hungry adults. My general opinion of most of the places that I’ve eaten at in Port A in years past has been that they are extremely overpriced tourist places. Many of the old local joints that I used to enjoy when I was out there all the time are no longer there. It was time to try someplace new. After a little driving around, we all decided to stop at a touristy looking place called Beaches Cafe & Bakery. Read the rest of this page »

A lot of buzz was circulating around this place out on Padre Island, almost universally positive, but I hadn’t had a chance to get there and try it out for myself, but I was certainly very curious. I love local, non-chain places, at least I love to try them out. History has dictated that despite the local designation some of them turn out to be major disappointments (I’m looking at you Bellino’s Italian Restaurant). Even so, during the vacation out at Mustang Island, I had a chance to make lunch at Dragonfly and jumped at the chance. I was accompanied by my baby girl and three other adults, and we arrived right as they opened for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Read the rest of this page »
