Sunday Lunch March 25, 2018

Sunday lunch with the wife at a pizza joint just down the street from us, Googly’s. They have a large, varied menu for a pizza place including pizza, burgers, wings, pasta, subs, etc. They’ve been open a few years and used to be one of our favorite places to get pizza and burgers, but last time we were here a year or so ago, we had something of a customer service issue and we hadn’t been back since. Hopefully that won’t be the case today. Driving up, they have upgraded their outside signage significantly, but the menu that they usually have on monitors behind the counter isn’t working.

The wife has chosen the jack Daniels burger, it has cheddar, a jack Daniels barbecue sauce and fried onion strings on it. I went with a standard double burger and a sausage and pepper sub. We ordered the spicy fried mushrooms and the sweet potato fries. Hopefully things are back to their previous quality.

Sunday Lunch

It’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon, all sun and cool breezes on the Texas Gulf coast. Had originally planned to be in Houston today for a meet up with other Fiat owners, Fiats and Fraps, but after St. Patrick’s Day

celebrations last night I couldn’t bring myself to get up at six a.m. to make the drive. Lol. Hopefully the next one is more conveniently scheduled. On the plus side, today is my mom’s birthday so the wife and I are taking my parents out to lunch instead of dinner as originally planned. Waiting outside of Mikoto Ramen Bar for them right now. One of my new favorite places. Ready to eat. Lol

Review: The Angry Marlin Restaurant and Coolwater Bar

The Angry Marlin and Coolwater Bar
15605 South Padre Island Dr.
Corpus Christi, TX 78418
Telephone: (210) 272-9973

In recent years there has been an upswing in what I would describe as casual upscale dining on North Padre Island just across the JFK from Flour Bluff and the greater Corpus Christi metropolitan area.  Popular eateries like Dragonfly and Black Sheep Bistro have joined in with long time favorites like Island Italian to create a food scene that’s as varied and vibrant as any in the area.  They each tend to offer something a little more than just your standard dining experience, be it an outdoor area, distinct dining environment, culinary distinctiveness or infused liquors and unique beverages, each is little different and worthwhile to visit.  The Angry Marlin is a welcome addition to the Island dining scene and describes itself as:

“The Island’s newest restaurant experience, where fresh and local ingredients are always a must. Explore the ever evolving menu of seafood and Santa Fe flavors of chile, corn, and beans with a fusion of French and Italian cuisine.”

Review: Texas Flame Steakhouse

Pueblo Park Mall
4535 S Padre Island Dr #33
Corpus Christi, TX 78411
Sun – Thur: 11am – 10:00pm
Fri – Sat: 11am – 11pm
Texas Flame Steakhouse is something of an institution in Corpus Christi, and as such has been through a couple of iterations that I’m aware of, including some menu changes, at least one of which I’m still not happy about.  It used to be called the Longhorn Steakhouse, one of two restaurants that shared that name (the other being the rechristened Ol’ Steakhouse Co.), and changed its name when the chain Longhorn Steakhouse came to town.  Somewhere along the way they dropped my favorite menu item, a 20+ oz sirloin steak.  Not something that was popular with me at all, as you might imagine.  That notwithstanding, the wife and I still enjoy going there from time to time.

Glaceau Smartwater Review

SmartWaterDate Purchased:  January 3, 2015

Place Purchased:  Stripes

Purchase Price:  $2.20

I’ve always had a kind of love-hate relationship with bottled water, especially the higher price varieties.  It’s not that I consider them bad products in and of themselves, but I know too much to be comfortable with the way they are labeled and marketed.  For instance, the one bottled in my home town, Everest.  Yes, it brings to mind the name sake mountain and so forth, but it is bottled from the municipal water supply of my hometown, Corpus Christi, Texas, a couple of hours north of Mexico and not a mountain in sight.  Not to mention the water out of that municipal system is nothing special.

So having said that, I don’t know how much truth goes on label-wise, or if any of the long winded story about how it created is actually true, I do like the Glaceau Smartwater product put forth by the Cocoa Cola Company.  I like the mouth feel and taste of the water over most other water products I’ve tried, although I do think it is wildly overpriced.  I consider it one of my top three bottled waters and thus recommend it if you can get past the price.

Fast Food Feature: Taco Bell Fiery Doritos Locos Taco

The new Taco Bell Fiery Doritos Locos taco has been on my radar for a little while recently after I saw one of the commercials for it, and while my overall opinion of the first two tacos in the series is hit or miss (thought the original unimpressive and overly salty, even by Taco Bell standards, but enjoyed the second, ranch style one) I always keep an open mind when it comes to something that sounds good and is potentially at least a little spicy.  Besides, Taco Bell is admittedly one of my favorite fast food places and I always look forward to trying their new specialty items.   Now that full disclosure is completed…

Review: Wendy’s Store #2869 (Drive Through)

Wendy’s Store #2869

4123 South Staples

Corpus Christi, TX 78411

Hours:  Mon – Sun 10:00 am – 12:00 am

Wendy’s and I have had an on again off again relationship for years based on the tendency of the local franchise locations to be very hit or miss when it comes to quality, service and cleanliness of their restaurants.  I’ve had some of the best fast food at some Wendy’s locations, and then I’ve had some of the absolute worst, in terms of service and quality.  At one point I didn’t go for years after getting the worst chicken sandwich I’ve ever been served at a Wendy’s location (not this one, I got that at Wendy’s Store #3248, 45012 Ayers).  It so happens though that the good has generally brought me back because when Wendy’s is good, it’s usually very good and there is a location that isn’t far from the house which comes in handy when I just want to drive through and grab something to take back to the house as was the case on this occasion.

Review: Domino’s Pizza (Delivery)

Hours:  Sun -Thurs 11:00 am – 12:00 am

Fri – Sat 11:00 am – 1:00 am

Domino’s Pizza is my family’s current favorite for delivery pizza and has been for about six months or so now, beating out the previous favorite, Papa John’s Pizza.  It’s been my general experience that most fast food style delivery pizza is pretty much all created equal, and one being preferred over another has more to do with coupons and small variations in flavor than anything really different.  The other difference being the service that individual locations provide.  In the past I have stopped ordering entire brands of pizza after receiving abysmal service from the location that was servicing the area in which I resided (I’m looking at you Papa John’s Pizza Store #2249 in Flour Bluff).  The ongoing upgrade and some new products introduced by Domino’s recently have pulled things in Domino’s favor, at least as far as trying things out. Review: La Playa Mexican Restaurant & Cantina

La Playa Mexican Restaurant & Cantina

4201 South Padre Island Drive

Corpus Christi, TX 78411

Hours:  Mon – Sun, 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

To my knowledge, there are at three restaurants that are actually labeled as “La Playa” in the Corpus Christi area, and at least one other that basically has the same menu.  Ironically, one of the locations that is actually labeled as a La Playa has a very different menu from the other two, well relatively speaking for Tex-Mex food that is.  It wouldn’t be truthful to pretend that I don’t already have some very set opinions about all these locations having eaten at them all repeatedly over the last several years for a variety of reasons.  By and large, my opinion is generally favorable overall, but that is the past.  This is focused on my visit recently to the location on South Padre Island Drive near Weber Road. Review: Nolan’s Original Poorboys (Takeout)

Hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday,
11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday-Saturday

Nolan’s Original Poorboys is an interesting situation.  The Nolan’s Restaurant on Weber Road and hasn’t been open in years and years was one of my grandfather’s favorite restaurants and I had many a meal there growing up, and fell in love with their signature poorboy in the process.  After years of not having any locations close by, this smaller, less full service restaurant more casual dining venue opened nearby, bring back many of the classic flavors from my childhood, including the aforementioned poorboy.  Needless to say a very exciting prospect for me.  On this occasion though, I didn’t actually feel like getting out and going inside for a sit down meal, although I have in the past.  On this occasion I decided to call in a to go order and use their pickup drive through window.  Read the rest of this page »
